I am looking for somone who's willing to have a direct line of communication with weather its email or whatever. I'm a disabled combat veteran who's got alot of time on my hands. I go onto groups and pages on Facebook and I'm ashamed of and disgusted with the aggressive arrogance every one of them is full of. I'm here to learn, I respect numismatics and have found slight purpose doing this. I know people make science experiments plating coins and or other various ways of destroying coins yet making them look like something it isn't. I have a 1954 wheat and it weighs 3.3 it's SLIGHTLY magnetic which is confusing. Also, there are a few nicks and scratches and it makes it seem this material throughout not just plated...anyone willing to make a friendship? God bless, happy hallows eve. @knox, first welcome to CCF. Second, I'm glad you've found us—the goal here is education so you've come to the right spot.
With regard to your dent, I think your initial idea of it being plated is correct. If it was scratched before plating, then those would not necessarily have been filled in. Also, I believe that nickel plating can be slightly magnetic.

I will start with your coin presented: seem to be plated. According with the alloy's components was not suppose to be magnetic in any way.
Second welcome here where you will learn a lot. You ask a mentor?, in fact all's here we mentor in one way or other mainly in our specialty.
I am a VET also, and your story shake my hart. I lost 2 solders in 25 years of missions and believe or not I feel sad and I blame my self for the lost. Ignore those hypocrites and Igno rants who do not have a clue of what you done and what sacrifice you do 'it, in fact for them. Welcome here. You choice a very nice hobby. This hobby it is a challenge in all the coins and I think you can take.

Knox, you should find this place a fun and sometimes a perplexing place to be. some of the coins that pass through here can boggle your mind at times. I, too, am a Disabled Vet (90% rated) but still lucky enough to be able to work. And your coin here has been a bit abused while in circulation before it was plated, Nickel or a zinc alloy comes to mind here which can be slightly magnetic if mixed properly.

At the risk of coming in late; yes, your coin appears to have been plated.

Slight magnetic attraction is seen on plated coins with a coating of nickel in them. Plating on a nice shiny coin is often a three step process. Copper, Nickle and Chrome. So these will show a slight attraction because of the plating. This also increases the weight of coin. 3.11 grams is the normal weight for a copper cent. For a Steel cent it is 2.7 grams. For a Zinc cent it is 2.5 grams. All coins have a tolerance allowance as they are not weighed pre strike. (Only Gold coins are weighed) If it were a Steel cent, the attraction to a magnet would make the coin leap with a magnet even before it touched the coin. Some plating companies plate some of their coins to show the quality of their services. But a plated coin does not increase the value to a collector. It is an altered surface coin. While some may like them, to a collector, they are not appreciated. So no premium to a collector. Welcome aboard. We enjoy those who want to learn hear. To get answers to questions you've not even thought of yet, note the Top box on the forum page. Many of these answers are already that that you may have wondered and many more. I like to help others to see what we are talking about rather than just read about. Thus when you look at these discussions, there are lots of images. So you are training your eyes as part of the process. Thus you will see what I seen on your coin. CoopHome (Note it turns blue?) This will get you there also and other terms in blue, you can click on to show you examples. CoopHome: How can you tell a plated coin? the weight will be increased and the surface will be too shiny to be a Steel cent.

Probably not. The post count starts on post #2, as he hasn't posted the second time, that will show that he already has one post. So he is still with us. Then it will show the previous count.

@KnoxH. First. Thank you for your service and welcome to the community. I check here every day but I hardly comment, because I agree with what's been said (97%) of the time. Because of course you want to get the answer you need to prove (you're right?) You'll find here an honest to the best that can be made about a certain coin. Sometimes it'll hurt and be confusing. Remember we're looking at pictures. Your description of your coin was to the point. That helps a lot also. If you hang in with this hobby and here at CoinCommunity. Try to check daily or as much as possible for what people post and their questions. (And) also importantly the answers they receive!! If you want to be able to receive emails from one of us you'll need to set that up you will except emails. Lol I don't exactly remember how but at first I didn't and sense then there's been no issues from doing so. Oh by the way with what was said about platting. Hope to see more post. Take care!!
