I was just wondering what your thoughts are on what happened to this penny.

I would say it was struck with something. (you no doubt already knew that). What does the reverse look like? Does it have a raised area opposite of the dent? Post mint damage. And to the forum.

Couldn't have happened at the mint, also known as post mint damage.

Defiantly post mint. Very odd indentation though. Can't think of what could make the "outie" on the reverse without any other damage to the reverse elsewhere

I would say a small punch could leave a coin looking like that. You can see other marks on the rim. Is that a re-punched mint mark? A closer look will help.

i was thinking that something probably struck it but then I kinda think it was heated there somehow, there is an outie on the indentation, which is pretty much what confuses me

welcome to the forum! Yes, it is post mink, and yes it is damage, but from what? I thought at first it might have been from a pellet, but the small luump, makes that unlikely. A defective pumnch would do it, depending on what kind of damage to the pinch. nice pictures. Dick

No doubt at all it's post-mint damage. No indentation created into a coin would show in the other side...such as indents, struck-throughs, etc. All of these involve only one side of the coin while leaving the other side completely normal.

Probably one that was damaged with a dent in the end of it negative to the bump you see in the center of the obverse. happens to the best of coins.
