I was blown away by a foul smell. I use a gun safe to house my collection and somehow got a mouse stuck in my safe and die. The smell is overwhelming. I found his (or her) corpse entangled in a three ring binder I quickly disposed of. I wiped down the vinyl pages with Clorox disinfectant wipes and dried them off. I did find a 1/2" bolt hole in the floor meant to bolt the safe down (it is bolted to concrete but had an extra hole). I filled the hole with a spray in foam rodent barrier. I put an automobile "fabreeze" air scent in it. It is carpeted. My wife suggested some Lysol spray on a day I can empty the safe and air it out. Any other ideas please on getting rid of the dead mouse smell. I also put a snap trap in it so at least the next one will be easy to find.

Now that's a good story. Acetone, in this instance, won't do any good!
Thumbs up for vinegar.

Go to your local funeral home or call a corpse cleanup service . Both are able to help !

A very long soak in acetone should do wonders for the mouse.

Dead rodent smell is the worst. I was on vacation in Atlanta & had a rat crawl into my car's cabin air vent in a parking garage. Somehow it got stuck & died....probably when I turned the AC on. This was over a long 4th of July weekend, the AC wouldn't blow cold air due to the blower motor being jammed, & the car started to reek after a couple days. When I got back home the mechanic I used was able to pull a bit more than half of the corpse out of the system. I ended up parking the car against a tree where I knew an ant bed was & leaving it until the 8-lane ant trail into the car disappeared. That got rid of the smell but every time it rained for the next several years a little bit of eau de death would ease out of the vents. Did I mention the car was less than 6 months old when this happened?

I once picked up a mint package of Canadian coins, the person was a smoker and the smoke smell permeated everything. I ended up putting it in a plastic bag with activated charcoal from a fish tank filter. Took a few days for the smell to go away. Activated charcoal works as does sodium bicarbonate (Baking soda), they do take a while and you have to keep the safe closed. Be careful with vinegar or other chemicals as some can tarnish coins (DO NOT USE WINDEX or anything with ammonia)

I tried the acetone soak. The mouse is still dead.

Yikes! Remember that episode of Seinfeld, "The Smelly Car?" You might have to solve this problem a similar way.

Did you carpet the safe yourself? Maybe just replace the carpet.

Replacing the carpet, as kbbpll suggests, may shorten the process of getting rid of the smell. Quote: I tried the acetone soak. The mouse is still dead.
