This is basically what I'm facing. I decided to move some of my Pokemon collection into coins and ended up with $1,250 from the sale of the particular cards I was selling. I'm going to come up with a plan and then try to execute it at the next two monthly coin shows in Columbus and if I don't find what I want, then at the big Ohio State Coin Show over Labor Day weekend.

Just thought it would be fun to see how all of you would spend this money. Would you buy one coin? Try to find some kind of type set? Is $1,250 not even enough to warrant getting out of bed for you to go to the coin show? Let me hear your thoughts!

An Anglo Saxon electrum thrymsa, which is in an upcoming public auction. It has an estimate of AU $1,000. Has a weight of less than 1 gram. Almost a once in a lifetime opportunity for me.

Every coin issued by the Anglo Saxons in the post Roman Dark Ages period is rare, bronze or silver sceats, but electrum or gold thrysmas especially so.

If you are attending a coin show in Columbus,
how about looking for a nice Double Dime (20 Cents)? - may be easier to find in the US; I am certainly having a hard time finding a nice example of this coin in Australia.

If this money is truly considered disposable income it would buy a nice 1950 proof set

John1, I'm not specifically looking for advice on how I should spend my money and more just interested in how other collectors approach the hobby and breakdown their decisions to buy things.

I don't have anybody to talk to in real life about such matters so it's fun for me to get an idea of how other people shop and approach the hobby.

Ten years ago I was operating like you describe. I was selling off my childhood baseball card and coin collections, and using the proceeds to grow my new coin collection themes. Somehow those sources of income dried up, but I kept buying coins anyhow .

My collecting themes are all in World Coins, so smaller coin shows are not of much interest, BUT I am planning to go to the Ohio State show because I live 10 minutes away (I am on the other side of the Columbus metro area from you). Actually the last coin show I attended was probably that show 3 or 4 years ago. There was a Chicago dealer last time around who had some nice Polish coins. I could use most of a $1250 windfall to fill a gap in my collection for a coin like this one: https://wcn.pl/archive/77_0267?q=Ja...oru%C5%84%2C

If you'd like to meet up for a coffee, or lunch , let me know by PM.

prior to really getting into coins I would have bought several coins to fill holes. today i'd buy one key coin in a specific series at the highest grade $1250 could buy knowing that over time that coin has a really good chance of increasing in value.

i think there a couple series that seem to be the most popular

1. Lincoln Cents
2. Morgan dollars

so maybe a 09SVDB which is always in demand as its typically the last coin collectors need to complete the set. another coin that is always in demand is the 16D mercury again the last coin collectors typically need to complete the set. for the Lincoln you should be able to get a nice VF35 coin and the 16D you might be able to find a G4

Neat question... That amount of 1,250 in my pocket would go to one of my higher dollar bucket lister coins, at least 1 of 2 I am looking for. Either an 1800s Russian platinum 3 roubles, or an 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent

Early last year I sold one of my telescopes, after everything was done, I pockets $1270. Almost what you have. I always wanted a gold coin so I picked up a 1/2 ounce American gold eagle. With the leftover I picked up a few American Silver Eagles. While I had considered getting a large sized US note or the 1877 IHC, I decided to put the money into a safer purchase (non numismatic). The gold value is always there so it can be sold if needed. So that's what I did.

I'd probably look for a nice circulated 09-S VDB to complete my Lincoln set #2 which is my circulated set.

I'd scour the place to see if anyone had a fair looking 1793 Wreath Cent, because that's the only hole left in my type set that might be gotten for that amount. It would be a rough one for sure, but might have some charm and hold down its slot w/ some dignity. Still looking ...

Or, buy more Pokemon--the new stuff coming out in a few weeks. Pull the best, get 'em graded, sell 'em.

Whenever I find myself with a nice lump sum of money I like to spend it on one nice coin. I don't have the opportunity often but in the past it was how I bought my 1924 ms-64 Saint Gaudins $20 gold; my 1894 AU Morgan; 1928 ms 62 Peace; 1799 bust dollar and 1795 flowing hair dollar to name a few.
Right now I'd spend that amount on a 1887/6 Morgan in ms because it's on my wish list.

I'd get the last cents I need to complete my Wheat cent album and, if money allows, a GSA Morgan dollar.

Perhaps there is a US classic commemorative that strikes you fancy? With that budget, you could get a very high grade example depending on which one you may choose.
