Hello, I a new collector/hunter within this last year. I decided to start my search and collection through the Kennedy series.

Last week I found this 1983 that popped out at me. I first just thought it was a highly circulated coin but something kept my attention with the indent in the center of the profile. After setting aside my selection of "further inspection" pile, I got this coin under a micro and it all started to pop out at me.

I couldn't find any verified errors matching what is visible on this coin so my rational side tells me all mechanic errors. Maybe it's nothing, but I just feel there's so much going on with this coin! My key takeaways and questions;
1. The indent in the center seems quite odd, is this some sort of mechanical error?
2. The fading of the lettering by the dates and "in god we trust" seems as it would just be from a worn coin but then wouldn't the rim of the coin be worn also? It seems to still be very pronounced.
3. The doubling on a majority of the lettering reverse and obverse is on almost every letter/detaill.
4. And the kicker, that very definitive doubling down the profile of Kennedys nose and mouth!

Maybe I'm just overly excited because it's my first find, please help shine some light on this coin, all feedback and knowledge is much appreciated it! Thanks!

Welcome!!!

That Kennedy is a mess - that is one sad die. The doubling you are seeing looks like Die Deterioration Doubling. The partial date and motto is most likely a rolled thin planchet - what is the weight of the coin? Could also be a Grease Filled Die but will weight for a wait. (yes that was on purpose).

BTW, far too many pics. Next time just Obverse, Reverse, and one or two supporting close-ups is more than enough. Good photos tho!!!

@cj, first welcome to CCF. Second, that doubling looks like Machine Doubling to me.

Spence nailed it. Machine Doubling on the bust. The die also shows to be grease filled as well.

I know it looks cool but it really is just MD. You may want to keep it just for a good example and conversation piece.

I agree with Machine Doubling, quite common and not an error.

Go to error-ref.com and search for " Grease Filled Die" concerning the faint lettering.

Research Machine Doubling there as well to explain the doubling on the profile and on the words on the REV. MD is common on large coins.

The die used to strike this coin was over-used and that also helps account for the weakness of the lettering as well like on UNITED on the REV.

The front mark on his head is likely just PMD.

I want to give you the tools to find out for yourself whenever you suspect you have a doubled die, RPM, or OMM. Go to varietyvista.com and look for the coin by date and MM. If you do not find an EXACT match to your coin listed using this easy method, then you most likely have a damaged coin or other issues like (non collectable) Machine Doubling, Die Deterioration Doubling, etc. (look these up at error-ref.com)

Using that method is going to help you avoid "false starts" and disappointment.
