I saw this 1842 Liberty Seated dollar on ebay. It is in an NGC slab and is graded "AU Details - Damaged". It sold for $360. I was not the buyer and didn't bid on it. I am no expert, and only own one Liberty Seated dollar, but this coin looks to be extremely over-graded to me. Am I missing something? Thanks for sharing your opinions. Paul Bulgerin

The certification number is correct, but that's not the right coin in the slab. The photo of the slab on the NGC verification site shows a completely different coin.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for checking.

Here are the photos of the original coin from the NGC website. Looks like the label is authentic, but obviously a different coin inside.

The coin has the same black spot on the obverse and the same black looking last A in America on the reverse. I think it is just an over edited picture but the same coin! EDIT: Same damage to the rims too....................

No way it is the same coin, just look at the wear. Pick any details you feel like - wings, torso, etc...

The coin in the ebay listing is rotated a few degrees in the slab compared to the NGC picture.

Then explained the same black marks and rim damage please! And who knows how long that coin has been in the holder - over the years it could have slightly rotated.
EDIT: Look at the reverse label how washed out it is - the details of the coin have been washed out just as well.

I agree with @marve. Looks to me like the pattern of tarnish spots around the date is the same:

Ya I see what you are saying Marve. But why? I can't see how anyone would have more interest in the altered image over the original.

Quote: But why? I can't see how anyone would have more interest in the altered image over the original. I have no idea! I got to say this was a first for me seeing something like this on ebay! But I know it can be done because I always mess around with my editing program and for some reason you can wash out details of pictures. That's why I noticed it.

Well that's a plot twist! That would explain the implausibility of someone breaking out an AU details coin and replacing it with a genuine F-VF coin in the original holder. I agree that the pattern of toning spots makes it likely to be the same coin. But very odd that someone would digitally alter the image to create more wear. It obviously didn't help the ebay sales price.
