Is there a coin or set, that, once owned by you would stop your collecting of new coins and just sit back and appreciate your collection?
There must be a point to it all.
What are your goals as collectors?

I enjoy the collecting part as much or more than the appreciation part. My experience is that as soon as I start to get close to a goal, I change the goal or come up with a new one to take it's place. I like to be on the lookout for new coins - that's a lot of the fun of collecting to me.
When I got my 7070 filled, then I started back on the Lincoln set and changed the Lincoln goal from "average circulated set" to "uncirculated set in Red or Red/Brown". That should keep me busy for awhile but I am sure I will come up with something else when that one is done!

As a collector, the only way I would ever be satisfied with a set is if I owned the top grade for every coin in the set. The only set I can ever see myself completing this way is the SBA dollar set. If they interested me enough, I suppose I could also start the Presidential dollars and do the same. Like KenKat said though - before I ever get to the point where I've completed a perfect set, my tastes have changed.

Once I fill a set, I move on. I don't try to upgrade the coins in the set unless they are damaged. And since I'm into the darkside ... I'll most likely NEVER meet my twentieth-century type set goal!

My goal is to continuously have fun. When I complete albums, I move on to new ones or upgrade the old ones. For me, there is no finish line.

I heard someone once say "I don't want all the land in the world, just the land that is touching my land."
Once I completed one kind of set, I'd be looking for the next ones to collect.

I agree with Tim - "There is an end?"
I hope I can always find something to keep my interest in coin collecting alive. I don't think it will be new coins from the mint, but something.

YES. When you get as old as me you realize YES, there is an end. To coin collecting, paying taxes, arguing with relatives, etc. Unfortunately when it happens, you really don't care.

I don't think any of my sets is truly ever finished even if I tell myself once I get this one last coin thats it, because if I happen to find an upgrade that I can afford I know I will end up buying it for the set

I believe a collector (myself including) could be satisfied with a single coin (s)he acquires. Especially if it was a long and persistent hunt. I also believe, no matter what you think, your satisfaction, whether it is about a coin, a small set, or a very extensive set (which you perceive as your whole "collection") is not forever. A true collector will start a new hunt. I don't think there is an end ...

Don't think there is such a point of "ultimate satisfaction" when it comes to what I collect. Yes, if I finally get hold of a piece which fills that last "hole" in a particular series, I am very happy. But then ... as others have written, let's see what's next. Christian

To me, the ultimate satisfaction came when I realised I could never collect all the coins I wanted. Once I had a solid direction in which to head, I have become a much happier and satisfied collector. Even if the collection is never finished, I will never be able to say I wasn't satisfied. I am enjoying collecting a whole lot more and find I have more money to spend as there are no more impulse buys and no more buyers remorse.

Personally for me, and this is my take of it for me only, is that I have a problem. I am never quite satisfied or content with what I have. I think to myself, all that I want is this or that. Like I need it or I am missing something. Take the 1971 No S Proof Nickel I am after since the 1970's for example. I have it in my head that when I get that nickel, I'll be done collecting Jefferson's ( except to get the new ones each year that come out ) and then I still am trying to get a couple re-punched mint mark varieties. Why? Because I am more hooked on getting something I don't have. Once in a while I can sit and look through the collection, maybe even study some about certain coins, but my problem is I am hooked on more. More of anything. I would have made a good Noah when it came to filling the ark with two of every animal. The only problem I'd run into is I couldn't stop at just two of every kind and I would also have chased after Narwhals, Unicorns and Dragons a little too long. We all would have sunk or starved or missed the boat. I have been thinking lately how I might be the only one that will really truly appreciate the quality of my imperfect sets. When I am gone and if my collection is still together, somebody will open a binder, say "Wow these are pretty nice", comment on a few others saying "Hey he even had a 1971 No S Proof Nickel" or look at the backs of the coins and maybe notice saying, "It looks like somebody liked full step nickels" and close the binder and go onto the next box or folder. What took me countless hours over more than 30 years to put together a collection can be breezed over in a matter of minutes, well maybe an hour or so, and the impression is made about the collection and the viewer either wants what I have put together or moves on. The lesson for me to learn is that the fun is in the hunt, I am pretty much doing this for my own satisfaction, and I ought to once in awhile stop and smell the roses and admire my accomplishments too. As for me having this personal problem, I try to keep it in balance, I have had a lot of fun and made a profit so I suppose it is a positive problem. I think I'll always be a collector til I die, but I hope I become a wiser one.

I love this hobby and most importantly, introducing it to someone who has never collected before. To me, there is nothing like seen a childs face light up when you give him or her a Mercury dime or Wheat cent for the first time ;-) No, I don't believe there is an end.
