Say you have a friend who isn't a coin collector, but has shown interest in your stuff. You're on a limited budget...say ~$20US...and want to buy 1 nice coin as a gift for them. What do you select? Let's assume that they haven't given any specifics...like never said "quarters are my favorite coins" or anything like that. They've shown interest in US modern & classic, world coins, bullion, ancient Roman & Greek, slabbed & raw...pretty much anything you've shown them elicits a "WOW!" or "That's really cool!" You want to give 1 coin that might inspire a new collector. What do you give? Pics please Edited by bwbollom 04/19/2011 6:49 pm

~$20US narrows the field. I would probably get the best Franklin half that would purchase. Its part classic coinage and part US history.

To answer my own question and get the ball rolling, I'd probably buy the oldest and best grade, ANACS (or other) graded Walking Liberty half dollar that I could find for $20. This would be old enough to be a "classic" US coin. It's large enough to show beautiful detail in AU or better. The design is one of my favorites. It's a nice chunk of sliver which is rising in value rapidly these days. Having a graded example would allow them to either keep it as is and know it's protected without needing to go do anything else, or break it open to add to an album. That's what I'm thinking so far, but I'm curious what others would select and why...

I only said Walker over Franklin because I like the design more and you could find an even older date for about the same price. ~$20 is completely arbitrary, but I just like knowing what people would select given certain limitations...

I chose the Franklin half, because the question was a coin for a non-coin collector. Hopefully coins or history might spark an interest.

Walking Liberty is certainly a good choice, but just to give you more options, I'll throw in the 2-cent 3-cent coins. Odd denomination + they are more then a century old.

For $20 you should be able to find a decent large cent, you cen bet they never got one of those back in change.

You could also get a fairly high grade Mercury dime, if you went with one from the 40s and not full bands.

no no no no Go with something older. Get them really thinking, "This coin is really over 130-150 years old?" try and find a decent large cent or something. I agree the halves are cool but go with something that they won't see every day. An old copper would be my gift of choice.

I would agree with a nice Walking Liberty half. Its a large coin and a beautiful design, hence the highly sought after Silver American Eagle Bullion Coins.

Agree with bman, get em a large cent. You can get a decent F-12 with no issues for around 20 bucks.
