Just recently I started to get into coin collecting. I used to be very interested as a kid until about 10 years ago. After looking through my old collection I have decided I want to work on completing a Mercury dime or silver eagle set.

So, is it worth it right now? I've been looking at ebay at prices and it seems to me that so much of their value is in their weight in silver. That doesn't interest me though. I am worried that if I try to complete a set of either of these two coins right now, that down the line they will be worth half what I paid for them. I'm not trying to do this as an investment, I just don't want to loose a whole bunch of value.

I know silver is a hot topic right now so I apologize if this has already been discussed in another thread. Any thoughts on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have been having some of the same concerns as you are.

No one really knows what silver will do.

So buy the coins that are not attached to siver value.

IMO .. buy the better date and key coins... in your target grade.

I do think there are some good coins coming out right now.

For Mecury dimes:
1916 D, 1921, and 1921 D if bought right these coins will hold
or increase in value over time.

Finding early date mecury dimes in problem free XF/AU or better,
can be hard to find, so get these when you can .. if the price is right.

Not sure where I heard it lately .. but you make the money on a coin when you buy it.
Meaning you have to get coins at the right price .. or just pass

Based on your concerns, I think I would go for the Mercury set. The silver value in a dime is about $2.40 cents right now. So if you buy a Mercury dime at spot, you're paying less than $2.50. The spot value is the same for a G-4 coin or an AU beauty. Because some people are dumping their silver hoards, you can find some of those nicer coins for the cost of their silver. Then, even if silver tanks, you've got a nice 80-year old dime that you picked up for $2.50. That's worth it to me.

In fact, that is how I'm hoarding silver -- I'm assembling sets of Mercury dimes and sets of Roosevelt dimes. If silver goes up -- woo hoo! If silver drops -- not a problem, I have complete sets of dimes (minus 4 Mercury keys and semi-keys).

Thanks for your advise, I like what both of you are thinking. I'll probably focus on the mercury set for now. Is there any way to take advantage of people selling their coins for silver or are most people sensible enough to sort out the rarities? I'm guessing all the lots on ebay have been sorted through. Also, is that the best place to buy coins nowadays? When I was younger there was a great coin shop in town, but now the two here are only for selling bullion. Thanks again for the replies!

This is my opinion:

ebay can be a great place to buy coins and also a horrible place. I was just reading a thread on someone who bought buffalo knickles and ended up with a 3 leg.

On the flip side, I would say 99% of the people selling have definitely already sorted through and picked there keepers.

There are two sides here. First off, what do you like, Mercury dimes or ASE? I have the complete set of ASE, Raw in Tubes, Raw in a Dansco and MS69 NGC. I love ASE and silver will come back, I am in this for the long haul.

Most rounds can be had for 39.00 dollars right now except the key date of 1996 which is closer to 70.00 slabbed and 59.00 raw. The run encompases 1986 to current.

Most of the Mercury dimes in "Decent" condition, which you will want at least XF or better, will cost more than $2.50 to put together and there are quite a few years to purchase to get it assembled.

It all boils down to what YOU like most. You might want to look at the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf collection. I put together one of those as well, don't get thrown off by all the privy marks on them, just buy the normal SML for the collection.

Secondly consider the storage medium, Dansco Album, Flips, Folder. A good storage medium will cost you about $25.00 and I believe the Mercury dime series has two books to it(might be wrong on that - would not be the first time.)

Bottom line, collect what you WANT to collect and worry about price later. In my opinion, ASE's will be faster, cheaper and they look beautiful in the Dansco. Also completing the Mercury dime set will be almost impossible unless you want to throw at least $2,500 into just one coin as a slider, anything higher can be in the 10's of thousands, the other Key date coins sell for just a little less.
