I bought 4 silver nickels off ebay a few days ago.(have not received yet) I was just looking at the picture and noticed the 1943 does not have the Big Mint Mark above the dome.Post Mint Damage? It looks kind of red also.Aren't these supposed to have a silver content? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:ITEdited by jasper62 07/19/2011 10:06 pm

compare the look of the 3's in the pics. The upper left 1943 has a 3 with a more open and wide swing to the bottom curve. The upper right 3 resembles the curves in a 1948. I have to wonder if this one without the mint mark is not a damaged/altered 48. I see the upper right also has some rim damage at the bottom, so maybe it is PMD and then the red coloring happened and it hides damage to the 3. A Henning, if I remember from the threads found here - has something funny happening in the end of the word Pluribus- something like a hole in one of the letters?

At least one of his dies had a loop in one leg of R, but he had several reverse dies, so that feature doesn't appear on all Henning nickels. His nickels also tended to be ugly strikes, and had pimples on some areas of the surface, and that nickel has those features, although it could just be that it's an ugly corroded nickel. There are some older threads about them on the forum if you do a search.

I think it is a 1948 Philadelphia nickel that was altered as well. I don't think it has any chance of being a Henning as there is just too much sharp detail in the coin despite it has been heavily circulated. Hennings lack detail from what I have seen.

Henning made 1944 no mint mark War Nickels, not '43s. He also made 1939, 1946, 1947 and 1953 nickels. I think your correct that it's a 1948 that's been modified or damaged so that it looks like a 1943.

'48, no doubt. I've about given up hope on a new Henning variety discovery.

The good news is the guy has 100% positive feedback....so if it really is an altered 48' he might make it right. The bad news is no where in his listing does he say they are silver nickels nor does he say they ARE 1943...he says they are "marked" 1943 (interesting choice of words imo)...If he knew about it thats very shady (you will know if he tries to say...but my listing says "marked"....I hope its silver and has no mint mark...might be a great find! Let us know how it turns out!

I think it is an altered 1948 also. The shape of the so-called "3" is different from the "3" on the genuine silver 1943.

I think you got a great deal. Henning nickels from the 1940s sell in circulated grades for $20-30 each, I think. So great pickup!

It was a no show in the mail today. After reading the general consensus that its a 1948 I went from a high to a quick low.Oh well! that's about my kind of luck but still 3 of them are 35% silver which gives them $6.68 silver market value.still OK ,I only spent $4.65 total. No harm no foul.I'll still post some pics when it shows up.Thanks for all the input
