I have often thought that future coin collectors will have a ridiculous challenge with the profusion of state, ATB, famous women, and other quarter dollar series. The same is true of the dollar coins.
It certainly makes the 21st century type set a challenging concept.

Modern clad coins are basically just tokens. If you save them instead of spending them, the gov't. makes money while inflation reduces their purchasing power.
It is sort of like what happened to stamp collecting. Who bothers to put away mint sheets anymore?
Mint USA stamps back to the 1930s can be had in quantity for less than face value. Factor inflation into the equation, and it's an even worse investment. Plus, email has all but eliminated casual correspondence, so there goes one good way of using up their cash value.
My dad was a dedicated mint stamp saver, full sheets included, throughout the 1930s and 1940s. It was money spent in hope of future gain when he could least afford it. Today a full sheet of commemoratives from eighty years ago isn't even enough to send a first class package.
If he had only saved a single unc Mercury dime, Standing Liberty quarter and walking lib half of every date and m/m, or had picked up some of the millions of expired license plates being discarded or tossed into wartime scrap drives, he could have created the multi-million dollar estate he always desired but never obtained.

Well said. At least the Mint is transparent in its thievery, unlike the rest of the government.

People who spend money on albums to collect this junk are exactly like those who put away sheets of stamps long ago. The face value won't change over the years, but the purchasing power will steadily decline and the objects themselves, mass-produced as they are, will never have a collector following.

I find it odd than anyone would collect coins—or stamps for the matter—and expect any appreciable return on their investment.

Sure, it can be done, but there are far easier and less stressful ways to make your savings appreciate faster than inflation.

I know I have said something like this many times, but on my balance sheet, coin purchases are list with consumables, like food and electricity.

Well, you only have one more year to suffer I guess. The program concludes in 2025, just in time for the 250th anniversary coins/sets.

2027 is going to be worse, "Sports played by Children"

Hmmm... I can't tell if you're serious or not.

when are we going to see a coin release that celebrates coin collecting?
wouldn't it be delightful to see a modern re-issue of the bust half dollar?

Being Humanist, I am all for recognizing the achievements of women over the decades. However, the concept of the Women's quarters does seem to be a bit silly. There are a few nice designs IMO, but they are pretty meh overall.

The State Quarters were extremely popular it seems. They probably should have stopped at those, though. From what I gathered, the next series is going to be some kind of sports orientated scenario? I could be wrong. Who cares, though? If someone wanted to get into the whole collector's idea of ever changing coins featuring something significant, the Innovation dollars are probably the way to go. I think the Presidential dollar coins were pretty cool as well, but America has never really cared much about the dollar coin as a whole it seems.

Jbuck, I'm curious about this. Do you draw the line at some point or do you apply this rule strictly? Say you buy a graded rare coin for multiple $k's, would you consider it as consumable?

I recently wondered about this myself and it feels a bit extreme. Obviously I completely agree that one should not consider coins in general as an investment or to recoup 100% of cost if sold but.

We need to get rid of the one dollar note for it to ever succeed.

I have never come close to paying more than $500 for a coin.

That being said, a graded rare coin is way outside my area of interest. That kind of money goes into one of my investment accounts. I will be breaking that $500 barrier to fill the last three holes in my original sets, but those slabs will be cracked so the coin can rest in the appropriate Dansco album.

Yes, push comes to shove and worst case they have value, if only face.

To be clear, I am not going to throw away my coins, but I never plan to sell them either. What happens to them depends on my heirs and their ability to follow directions. I hope they understand the sentimental value, but I will not be around to argue against their actions.

Exactly how I feel about it. I don't look at my collection as an investment for the most part. Most of the value of my coins honestly is in the PM content from the moderns I own. So if my heirs just get $1 for each ASE I own... well... that's on them.

This topic took quite the turn!

I understand the OP's dislike of modern quarters and the countless designs/reverses. @ACWhammy, how did you feel about the the Crossing the Delaware reverse? Personally I wish that design had spanned the gap between ATB and whatever is coming in 2026.

That said, I don't mind collecting the women quarters other than the annual Silver Proof Sets are just way too darn expensive, which I think is (part of) the OP's complaint too. I think it was suggested to go to a coin shop/show (or even ebay?) and try to buy the silver / regular proof sets sans the silver quarters for 2021-2024 (and 2025 when they're out). Gotta be someone who has broken them up to sell off specifically the quarters.

I'll go one further and say they should have just kept that design as the new reverse and left it at that!
