OMG! My husband just got home from 8 days in Pennsylvania and he brought me back the BEST GIFT EVER from his parents. This is truly a coin collector's dream...29.6 pounds of coins (mostly cents) that were accumulated in the 1970s and earlier. I have only skimmed my eyes over the top of each can, but I didn't see a single coin dated after 1978. I did see Buffalo nickels, a silver quarter, and a Mercury dime right on top. A truly unsearched lot of old coins accumulated by people who had no interest in collecting. I can't wait to see what I find! *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

In the 70s in Maine silver and wheaties were still common in change. Have fun, and good luck!

Ok, so I haven't looked at any dates yet, but here's the first update. I sorted by denomination, so I could weed out everything that isn't a Lincoln Cent. As I mentioned, I didn't specifically study the dates yet, but I didn't notice anything more recent than the '60s in non-Lincolns. 21 Buffalo nickels112 Jefferson nickels (about 1/4 are MS) - 8 silver War Nickels33 Mercury dimes49 Roosevelt dimes - 37 silver and the rest are all MS 10 Washington quarters - 7 silver 4 Kennedy halves - no silver I haven't looked at the cents at all yet, but a huge portion of them are bright red. I didn't see any Indians, but I also didn't look for them, so maybe I'll get lucky and find a few.

It is a lot of fun looking through this lot. A no collector will understand the thrill of it. Please get us update about the lincoln cents too. It is my favorite.

Update - I've sorted about 1/2 of the Lincolns by decade. It appears these coins were collected from the early 1970s until 1975. There are no coins more recent than 1975 so far. There are equal amounts of '70s and '60s cents. There are equal amounts of '40s and '50s cents, but about half the volume of the memorials. There's a big dropoff in the '30s and there are very few in the '20s and teens. It's not looking like I'm going to find any key/semi-key dates, since there isn't much pre-1940 volume. I'm also not likely to find a '70S small date, since the coins were collected in PA in the early 1970s...very few S mints. I think these cans held ALL cents that were found in loose change, plus the older (at the time) coins of other denominations (since the other denominations were almost all pre-1965).
About half of the 1960s cents are AU or better. Most the 1970s cents are AU or better...and over half of them have gorgeous natural toning. I may need to start an album for just toned 1970s cents now lol.
