I have seen numerous people ask questions about what dates/mints to keep for certain coins when roll hunting. I have also seen numerous answers to these questions. I have searched a bit, but am having trouble finding what I am looking for. What I would like to do is make a list for each coin of what dates/mints to keep and seperate the list into reasons for keeping. (ex. rarity, varieties, errors, etc.) Then either sticky the thread, or post it in the Article Forum, then we can direct those askers there.
If you think this is a good idea, please post your opinions and list of dates/reasons here for discussion before the final list is compiled. If you think this is a bad idea or if it has been done somewhere already, please opine...

The rule of thumb is collect what you like and what you can afford.

Thanks for that sage piece of advise o' wise one. I should have known that I was going to get that response. So... what is the point of searching through rolls of coins if you don't know what you should keep and what you should turn back in?

This sounds like a good idea. A roll-searchers quick reference guide, so to speak. I know there are a lot of different threads with the same "what should I look for questions" and it would not hurt to have it all in one place.
If you have the initiative, look through the roll-searcher threads and compile the data. You can also do a search for "key date" and see what threads pop up, but there might be too many. The other place to look, if you wanted to include errors and varieties, is the US Variety and Error Coin Forum, of course.
Maybe someone else will chime in with some input.

I'll start with the Kennedy halves: 1964 (any mint) - 90% silver 1965~1969 (any mint) - 40% silver 1970D - NIFC, 40% silver 1976S 40% silver (NIFC, collector issue) 1987 (any mint) - NIFC 2002+ (any mint) - NIFC As always, some proofs escape into the wild, so keep them! I might have missed something. The JFK HALF DOLLAR ROLL HUNTERS should be compiled to see what other low circulating dates are "keepers"

Yes, I've searched numerous times throughout the past 8 months for stuff like this. I'm now just starting nickels and what did I do, I searched again and didnt find a whole lot, but enough to get me by.
I like the idea, hope we can sort this out.

That is exactly the reasoning behind this! I'm glad you guy like the idea! Thanks for the info on halves jbuck. Again, I will happy to to the "leg work" organizing and putting the info together, I just lack the info! And I know that there are some people here that have tons of info for the list. I will also continue searching for info. Should be a good team effort! Hopefully we can even get example pics of errors and the like.

I'd could use a similar list on Lincoln pennies. That "small date" tracking can be tricky.

Here's a couple of sample entries for discussion:
Denomination: 5 CENTS Year: 1943 Mint: Philiadelphia (marked with a large 'P' above Monticello reverse) Keep for your collection: 100% due to silver content Look for: double date variety 1943/2P ($35 in VG-8)
Denomination: 1 CENT Year 1984 Mint: Philadelphia Keep for your collection: Only elite uncirculated Look for: Doubled ear variety (1984P-1DO-001, $275 in MS-65); at least three other doubled obverse and one doubled reverse variety noted to aid you in achieving your goal of total blindless.

Morgan, the response to "collect what you like" is very practical if you consider that making any comprehensive list of collectible coins at this point is like reinventing the wheel, what with all the resources available about key, semi-key, variety, error coins.
I have my "list" I use when shopping around real life. It's got about 100 coins on it in all denominations; yet, it doesn't nearly include another 100 that I'd pick up at the right price.
Make sense?

Just depends on what your searching for.... a couple general guidelines. Keep Any spent commemoratives or proof coins (they do get spent and found) Any Nickel older then 1958... Any Wheat cent or older... Any Dime and Quarter 1964 and older Halves are tricky, lot to remember. Use the good list above. Don't bother searching small sized dollars...... buy them and spend them! ANY Large size dollar! These can be still occasionally found in banks. Even the Clad Ikes can be sold for slightly over face.

Yes, I realize this, but a small, consice, and informative reference guide for roll hunters would be utilized a lot. I am not asking about what to buy/look at at the B&M, though that info is good to have also. The "right price" for a roll hunter is face value. I think that my question was clear and that response was a bit general. I really had to contain my sarcasm (a very hard thing to do at times). I was tired of responses like that the second time that I read one. Whenever someone has a valid request about what they should collect, they are barraged with answers like this. All they are looking for is something like, "I would think about X, Y, or Z coins because they are kind of out of favor lately, and are easy to find, etc." Yes, I agree that one should collect what they like, though I highly doubt someone will collect something they can't afford, I really don't know how it could be possible! If it was possible I would be collecting MS $5 and $10 gold Indians. Now I have to stop lest my sarcasm rear its ugly head any further, and I really don't want anyone to think I am too crass. halfabustisbetter (thennobustatall?), I really like that format. It tells everything you need to know. Magnus & Alcochaser- Thanks for the input. everyone else- Feel free to add your own opinions!

That said... The trick is going to be consolidating all of this information into an article (as a reference guide). As people add responses, they will have to be sorted, and responses (like this one!) will need to be culled. I agree, halfabustisbetter has an excellent format! Then again, he is a Pillar Of The Community!

I believe the nine sisters means there are 9 different doubled dies for the year. I know there are quite a few.
