Should I let them know that they might have overpaid? The coin was listed for $540 or BO. They offered $368, and I quickly countered with $510. A couple of hours later I noticed that they paid full price. Is this one on them, or should I contact the buyer? Ed

This is what happened to me... I declined an offer (via the ebay messages) they bought the coin - then claimed non delivery and started a paypal charge back.... The two may be a coincidence - but reading their feedback it seems a large amount of their purchases "never arrive".

At best this sounds like someone made an error (my guess is that they were making many offers and multiple listings)
My spidey senses are tingling after this though... I would check out their buying history...
I feel the right thing to do is contact the seller <edit - BUYER> and let them know of the error..

Their buying history is good, only 100 or so purchases, with 100% feedback, and no sales.

Quote: I feel the right thing to do is contact the seller and let them know of the error.. It sounds to me like edweather is the seller. If "buyer" was meant, I agree. Contacting them about the fact that you were willing to take (and still would) $510 should go a long way towards good customer service.

the buyer really wanted the coin and was afraid someone else might buy it while waiting for a reply on a second offer (check the time, did they buy it before you countered?). or they thought they were buying it and the counteroffer price and simply mis-navigated ebay's pages. either way, karma says contact them and settle the difference

Since a couple of hours passed from the time you made a counter offer, the buyer might have gotten nervous that you had a better offer. The buyer has no way of knowing if you're actively watching the messages or if you went away for a couple of hours with no way to check messages.

Buyer made offer at 13:36, and I countered at 14:11, then buyer paid at 15:01. I contacted the buyer and told them I'd be willing to refund the $30. Just seems like the right thing to do. I was leaning in that direction, but just wanted to hear some opinions. Ed
edit: Buyer said they knew they messed up, and got finger fast with their phone, and thanked me for reaching out....refund sent!

Always glad to see a reasonable buyer AND seller on an ebay transaction.

I've had sellers do things like that - "Hey, noticed you won an auction on Saturday and also one on Monday, I was able to combine the packages, so I refunded the extra shipping" - things like that leave a really good impression of the seller and make you a favorite.

Happy ending. I'm sure the buyer will remember it.
