*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***I did my first coin roll hunt, and found a very nice looking 1936 Buffalo nickel in my first roll. Nothing much else until my next to last roll, where I found the nickel below. My question, other than the type of error this would be called, is if it is real (not counterfeit) and if so what general grading and/or value it would have. I'm quite excited at my start at coin rolls, and if I actually found two nice varieties, I'd be very pumped to keep going. I love variety/errors! Thanks, y'all. Peace.

It is not counterfeit. It appears to be MAD, miss aligned die. A very good example, also some finning on the rim.

Thanks, Jim0815! Since this was my very first box of nickels and I'm eager to keep going, I gotta ask...is this a cool find for a newbie, or pretty run of the mill? I'm 50 years old, and always wanted to find a real error coin.

Another quick question..."finning on the rim"? What is "finning"?

Very nice find and congratulations! It's a major Misaligned Die (MAD). Hold onto that one! It's a keeper! Here's what "Finning" is. http://www.error-ref.com/finning/

You should include the date, mintmark, and the denomination in your titles. Why Topic Titles are ImportantThe title of your topic is very important. Let's say you need help attributing an 1896 Morgan Dollar.... - Horrendous: Help!
- Bad: Need help with coin
- Better: Need help with Morgan Dollar
- Good: Need help with 1896 Morgan Dollar
- Awesome: Need help with V
AM on 1896 Morgan Dollar
This enables the members with expertise pertaining to your question to easily find and answer your question. The title of the topic also becomes the title of the topic's web page, which enables us to attract more collectors to the site. The more members we have, the more we learn.

@MS, that is a legit find. Well done, and be sure to protect it in a 2x2. When one side of the die is slightly misaligned, you see missing design elements (e.g. tops of letters) on one side and extra metal that is squeezed up (i.e. Rim Fin) on the other side.

When it is slightly misaligned the rim on one side is wider than on the other. This is a MAJOR mis-alignment where the die is so far off it overhangs the edge of the planchet, This obv die would have been banging on the edge of the collar with every cycle of the press.

@Fuzzy317--Whoops. My apologies. I was trying so hard to describe my find that I plain missed that I omitted the blessed type of coin. Brain gas moment. So sorry...won't happen again!
To everyone else--thanks so much for your input. I'm happy to be here, and hope to have more input soon, as I learn more. Peace, y'all!

Make sure you hold onto this, and put it in a 2x2 coin flip immediately!
