First I quick story, have a buddy that bought off of Ampex and said one was odd. He knew I knew Kennedy's so he asked...couldn't get the weight correct but it seemed heavy. 16 months later I get my hands on it....

Sound test - not right, yet not like a clad coin either but off when directly compared with a real 1964.

Next the weight, the most important test. (I thought)

After-Years---I-Have-What-I-Know-To-Be-A-Fake-1964-P-Kennedy-Half-Dollar

Definitely heavy....

Its a good fake, cast I bet, but still trying to look at it up close, USB camera doesn't work since billy gates forced me to Win10.

Still a pretty good job was done here..

Final test, yeah I know should have been earlier but was 99% convinced it was counterfeit.

The picture speaks for itself...

I have not been on the forums mush lately as time is precious but this is one I wanted to come back and get the news out. To me this is a very big deal. I knew it was coming. I have been watching for it. It is now fact and I sit here holding the proof.

I should not accuse but we ALL know who is doing this, and where they come from. This is blatant theft and NOTHING is being done about it other than our country is waking up to reality I guess.

I am a Kennedy half dollar collector, and to me this is a breaking point. Why? I know this was purchased through a major dealer of junk silver. Am I upset with them? Nah, they would replace it in a heartbeat. Actually the coin is not mine and I offered $50 for it unseen, now that I have it in hand, the offer went to $100. It is not for sale.

Folks, this is a dangerous thing, over 300 million of these minted, and even they are now being counterfeited. I collected these since I was 10 years old and have never actually been able to put my hands on a fake Kennedy. Magicians coins sure, I have hand searched over $250K dollars of bank rolls and found a lot of great things, but not this.

Even JUNK is not safe now.

Yes that is a disappointing find in your silver stack.

It's more than that. This should make all that collect give pause. 1964's were not faked for the longest time. This made it from a major dealer to end user about 18 months ago.

I am not convinced that it is fake , looks plated as for a key chain or something else .
XRF results would be a better indication .

Yeah being plated is possible. Does not sound silver though, the weight could be explained through plating however.

Sound is the clue. There is a sound for a real coin and a fake. Probably plated to make it look authentic. Often you can see sand casting on counterfeit coin:

After-Years---I-Have-What-I-Know-To-Be-A-Fake-1964-P-Kennedy-Half-Dollar
Note the sand looking grains on the coin? The sound will be more thud like than the ring of a silver coin when dropped about two inches on to a hard surface.

it's too bad you didn't have multiples of them cheaply, where you could cut one in half. have you got someone with a good xrf machine, that would be my first step.

If the metal is wrong, it might be magnetic? Tried that yet? Silver is not magnetic.

I did as I showed and it sticks to a neodymium magnet. Not as strong as a piece of steel would but the magnet will hold it upside down with ease.

Also the casting can not be right as the detail is pretty darn good on this one but I am no expert at it.

Forgot to change the ship to address, went to my old house....I ordered another one for now.

There are TWO addresses on the Bay, lived there a long time and just plain forgot to do both. My fault.

Trick question: Did you know 64 half dollars are worth $32? (Think on this on a bit.)
