BREAKING NEWS ALERT

A bill calling for a commemorative coin program to honor the 25th Anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001 was introduced yesterday (March 10th) by Daniel Goldman (D-NY) in the House of Representatives. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.

I'll follow with details as they become available.

Thanks for the news.

What other commemorative coin proposals are in the hopper for 2026?

I have not studied the modern commemorative series, but seem to recall that there is a limit of 2 issues per year. Whether that is by law or by tradition I don't know.

Any insights into what this proposed coin is competing with would be appreciated.

There were several 2026 proposals introduced in the previous Congress - I posted about each - but they each died for lack of action. We'll have to wait to see which of these resurfaces in the 119th Congress.

Of course, such proposals would be in addition to the Mint's planned coin/medal programs for the Semiquincentennial - these programs will be under the Mint's existing authority.

The two-coin limit is a matter of law, but Congress can always circumvent it if it chooses to.

Stay tuned! I tend to believe that a sponsored 2026 coin program for America's 250th Birthday remains a likely competitor.

I still like the idea of a 100th anniversary of the Oregon trail commemorative half dollar. Make it in dollar form as we currently promote. It is a popular, astatically pleasing design.

Such a coin is certainly possible, but I truly hope not! I'd prefer to leave such commemorations to Daniel Carr and his "Fantasy Overstrikes" series.

The 9/11 proposal is a very worthwhile commemorative program for 2026! I hope to see it along with a 250th program. I truly hope Congress sticks with the 2 per year limit.

In Commems opening He stated,

Quote: " A bill calling for a commemorative coin program to honor the 25th Anniversary of the tragedy of September 11, 2001 "

Something about the quoted sentence used is not sitting ,

a Commemorative coin Program honoring a Tragic Event Anniversary....

Our Commemorative coin program Has honored Great individuals and Great Events in America's Hard earned times. People, Buildings, Trails, Military's finest, Sport legends accomplishments, Founding people, Civil war, etc.

Since what date did Our Commemorative coins honor horrific Tragic Events, I Know it was Not during the Classic era, Modern commemoratives , The 1995 Civil war Battlefield Preservation coins came close, No?

Please do not Mis-Understand I just do not see how the Commemorative coin program Changed their ways, ....

It seems likely that once details of the coin bill are available, it will be clear that the coins will honor those who perished in the tragic attacks, along with those who responded to offer aid/assistance to those involved.

It's highly unlikely that the coins will celebrate the attacks!

While I appreciate the Topic,

I do not see the Tragedy lending itself to a Commemorative, JMO.

Case in point: The Kennedy half dollar does not celebrate or commemorate his assassination.

How about a commemorative coin honoring the Marilyn Monroe centennial in 2026?

Marilyn Monroe, the greatest American movie actress, was born on June 1, 1926 which means that 2026 will be the centennial of her birth.

We should ask the Treasury Department to mint a commemorative coin.

Such a coin would be a "best seller" as opposed to the commemoratives honoring obscure persons or events.

Marilyn sings a numismatic song "One Silver Dollar" in the 1954 film "River of No Return":

Marilyn sings "One Silver Dollar" (Written by Ken Darby and Lionel Newman)

One silver dollar
Bright silver dollar
Changing hands, changing hands
Love is a shining dollar
Bright as a church bell's chime
Gambled and spent and wasted
