Recent acquisition that just arrived - these are my pics. Obverse and Reverse holder is covered with super fine scratches. Coin itself is absolutely clear.

Here is the deal, this is in a CAC UNC-DETAILS-CLEANED holder. It has luster but faint. However, when adjusting image contrast/exposure it is really tough to see solid evidence of cleaning.

I am thinking of cracking and sending to PCGS. Would like to hear some opinions on cleaning, grade, and whether this may have a chance at a straight.

Thanks All, 2nd set of images had contrast/exposure adjustment to max.

This a really nice coin. It is either high AU or MS in my opinion. It doesn't look cleaned. The reverse and obverse both have what looks like a little mint gloss. The stars on the obverse all have detail (lines out to star tips). Not sure why the coin has a detail grade. Good luck!

That is an outstanding large cent. I don't see evidence of cleaning and even if it were I think it should be market acceptable. I would crack it out and resubmit. I think it could grade at least MS-65 BN and perhaps higher.

It's a really gorgeous coin, DOCC! But I'm against cracking out and resubmitting. Remember, CAC had it in hand and examined at 10X - and PCGS will do the same. Very low probability of getting a straight grade.

Good point Hondo, I'll add some images in a bit. Super zoomed and in focus at various sections. My scope lens goes 30X

It is a very nice looking cent!

I would leave it alone since I would hope any buyer would look past the details label. Also, Hondo makes a good point about the risks.

Personally I think the risk is worth it. If this hits a 65 or higher (totally plausible) straight the value proposition is there.

If it comes back DETAILS then I am right where I started - less $40 bucks.

I hear you JBUCK but people don't look past the details label. If they did - especially in a CAC holder - I would not have been able to pick this up at the price I got it for.

Here are some zoomed images - I call BS on CAC.

I keep looking back at this beautiful coin. I can see the hairlines on the slab lens but the coin still doesn't looked cleaned to me. Your scope pics show flow lines but not cleaning hairlines. The only other observation I can make is the face of lady liberty, from the chin toward the ear shows some subtle hairlines but I can't tell if that is on the coin or the lens. I still stand with my MS-65 BN assessment. What is there to lose by cracking it out? A "details" label practically condemns the coin while even if cracked out and kept raw, I'm sure others would agree with a straight MS grade.

It's a beautiful coin, especially the reverse which looks almost flawless. The left obverse field seems slightly discolored and this surface feature could be what the graders saw as evidence of cleaning.

Another trip to the graders might work out OK. They might overlook the surface issue or calculate a net-grade adjustment. I think most collectors would accept this coin in a problem-free MS holder.

Nice coin! I'd say crack it out and resubmit it for grading.

I can certainly be talked out of it :-) I trust the majority of opinions I get here (including you and Hondo) and it is great to get other eyes on it to validate, or invalidate, what I think I see.

We all know CAC's reputation for being stuffy. There was a thread within the past few weeks about a batch of the same coins that were cracked/submitted over a period of time to CAC, ANACS, and NGC (I think that is the 3, CAC for sure). CAC called the majority of them cleaned while the other TPGs did not. Someone is wrong.

I'm not one to play the submission game, if I crack and get another DETAILS. Done. If it straights I have a 2K +/- coin

Holder MisterT - it is a mess. I'll try to buff out some of the scratches with mineral oil.

would PCGS call this questionable color. Does CAC use the term or is it the standard Details-cleaned for them. Lovely coin no matter what the slab says
