Just curious about this. I have 8-9 coin albums, most of them Dansco. As you all know, the main one I usually seem to chip away at is my Lincoln Cent collection. About six months ago, I completed my Jefferson nickel collection. That was the first real set I ever completed. I then added some coins here and there, namely proofs, into a new album. I have an album for a circulated, non-proof collection that I sometimes put random nickels in that I find if I should happen to go through some nickel rolls. I have been so tempted to start so many different sets. But I feel also having a type set is kind of a good way to sort of take that edge off of coins that I would sort of like to acquire in my collection, but not necessarily build an entire set of. Does this make sense? For example, Ike dollars. (Sorry jbuck!) I like Ike dollars, but at the time being, I don't really want to build like a whole set of them or anything like that. I wouldn't mind having a few nice ones, though. I kind of like being able to both coin roll hunt different coins, and purchase them at the same time. I have a Kennedy half dollar P&D set that starts at 1964 that I have some coins in and just honestly haven't done much since starting the collection in December of last year. I've added maybe 8-10 coins. What I'm actively working on: Lincoln cents 1909-2009 Buffalo/Liberty nickels SBA/Sacagawea dollars 2000-2007 And of course, my recently started type set. So that begs the question for me, is it possible to work on too many things at once? Is it better to focus on one specific kind of coin or a couple? Like my Lincoln cents, I am also considering adding a new album for Shield cents + proofs. But, this would effectively go along with my Lincoln cents in general. I suppose it really depends on the person, and I'm sure there are people who work on many different sets at once. I'm curious to what you guys think. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

I don't think that you need to restrict your sets for any reason other than cost. Having a number of things on the go makes collecting more interesting.
The IKE set seems quite doable from a cost perspective.

I try to do 1 at a time but for my slabbed coins I've been buying when something I like in a price I like comes up. Honestly though lately, I've cut back as I have other hobbies and only so much money.

Lately, I have been concentrating on the New stuff (1999 and up), not expensive, but enjoying seeing a particular coin collection grow (Slabs only). I enjoy looking for deals. I just finished the Washington State Quarter collection, Silver MS69 slab, about 3 weeks ago... Now working on Susan B. Anthony coins and the Sacagawea dollars in PF70. I do have other older coin sets that are about 70% complete...

OMG - that list is huge I'm busy keeping my Dansco albums all updated. Plus I'm updating my Buffalo nickels to BU examples, completing my Mercury dimes collection (just need to image these and get them into my Dansco album. working on my 7070 album Maintaining OGP collection of Clad, Silver proof sets (these go back to 1950 and I have them all) Maintaining my uncirculated coin sets - dated back to 1950 also. Sheesh, what else? Still working on my World coin collection - but that is almost finished. Started a Franklin half dollar Dansco set Collecting at least one each of the Silver eagle coins in OGP and a Dansco album as well. when it comes to OGP sets, I have all of the Prestige, the Premier silver sets, and the Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets Working on the Silver Presidential sets, and any Military coin or medal released there is more....

My coin collections in a Dansco Album are done. Now I'm just a coin "Hoarder" . I religiously collect graded/slabbed 1909-S, 1931-S, and 1959 Cameo proofs!

Quote: I don't think that you need to restrict your sets for any reason other than cost. I think that's a fair point. The major factor is probably whether you are a completionist, and how many sets you can enjoy as incomplete. Some collectors need to finish sets promptly. I have been slowly building my bicentennial collection for two years, and I am nowhere near complete. It might take a few years before it is relatively done to my satisfaction, but I am not willing to overpay for coins or buy substandard coins as "hole fillers".

I can focus on two, maybe three sets at a time. Any more than that and it feels like I'm just buying for the sake of buying (and making mistakes along the way), then when the good stuff comes around, I've already blown my budget.

I'm rather eclectic, right now I'm collecting Connecticut coppers, which will never be completed, large cents that it's highly unlikely to be completed, Coins countermarked by the edict of 1640 in France which there is no such thing as being completed, and Barber halves, just so I have something going to complete!

I'm at the stage where I am adding new issues to my ASE collection. It started as a goal of having one (of any kind) per year; now have the whole set. I add to my mint, proof, and silver proof sets each year. Have taken an interest in graded Franklin half dollars lately and will soon have at least one per year of the series. I've tended to focus on one collecting enthusiasm at a time.

I don't think there is any right or wrong way to collect as long as your happy and it's within your budget. Everyone has different personalities, goals and financial abilities. I don't see anything wrong with working on multiple collections at a time since your interest may very week to week or what is available. As for me, I just recently got back into coin collecting so I am in the catchup mode. I'm currently getting mint sets and proof sets so I'll have the uncirculated and proofs from 1968 to date. I figure it's cheaper to get the set than to try and buy them individually. So technically I'm working on cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars each time I get one. My focus jumps around, recently I worked on the Innovation Dollars and just about have them done just need the 2022 Reverse Proof set and I'll be caught up on them. This weekend I worked on ordering all the S-mint quarters from 2012 to date since they are not part of the mint sets. The week before I ordered Dansco albums for my Mercury dimes and Buffalo nickels and a blank page for the V nickels and moved them over to those albums. I ended up ordering one Buffalo and a four V nickels. I have alot of albums I still need to buy for the different sets. I also have a graded PCGS set of SBA's but I'm to the point with those that I have not found anymore to add in the grade I'm looking for. My interests far exceed my funds plus trying to not cross the spouse approval limit

Two and a half (one of them overlaps with the other two).

I gave up on my Dansco US type many years ago, primarily due to changing interests and deploying capital elsewhere.
I significantly slowed my Canada type, but will pick up something at a show every couple years.
So I suppose only two (or one if I can combine two related sub-niches into a single niche).
