I have been collecting a little over a year now, at least what I would consider seriously collecting and trying to get educated about it and realized that my collection is a massive hodge podge of a little bit of everything. No real direction.

So, I borrowed Jack Sparrow's compass for a little while. You know, the one that only points to what you want.

Well, after my first year on this forum I have finally come to the realization that I just don't like the modern coins.
Yeah, I'll still roll search for errors and varieties, but otherwise I'm done.

My Lincoln collection will end with the LP1-4's.

My Roosevelt dimes are going to stop in 1964, the last year of silvers.

My Washington quarter collection would have ended in 1998, but since I have the State Quarters, they will end there.
*Speaking of which, I have finally been able to let go of the fact that the satin finishes came in my last 6 sets.
I have come to grips with my State Quarter album being "mint sets", regardless of business strike or satin finish.
My heir can decide what to with that and now I no longer have a bruised forhead doing this .

My Kennedy halves will stop with 2010, only because I bought a mint bag of them.

From this point forward, the only thing that I will collect that is modern will be silver, with the exception of those gawdy things I seen at the F.U.N. show. They are absolutely ridiculous in my opinion. If I do collect one, it will be the Florida one only, maybe.

I want to start working on the sets I have backwards, Franklins, Walkers, SLQ's, Barbers, Morgans, Peace dollars, etc. back when coins were real.

Besides, what will my heir collect if it is completely up to speed when I hand it over? Got to leave them something to do and catch the bug with.

I can only pray that they sign up here and ask for advise and catch the bug before doing anything silly.

This will give them something to collect at what should still be affordable to them without putting the pressure on them to fill a few key date holes.

I know it looks like I'm disrespecting the nickels, but I just don't have much a set of those with the exception of some spectacular War Nickels.
Besides, they'll fit into the affordable to collect for my heir category.

And if they do decide that they want to spend some money and go for a challenge, they will still need every proof ever made.

It's nice when you know what you want.

But make sure to seek out Sparrow's gadget once in a while to check your bearings, things do change ...

By you own admission you have been collecting for one year. A collection should be looked at long term as a lifetime. Modern coins are easier to acquire than older ones. The way you have been collecting a little of everything is a good way to start but what I find works best for me is to concentrate on one set at a time. Work your way backwards until you complete each set. If you are on a tight budget this works good as you can accumulate a lot of newer coins at lower prices. Don't get discouraged if you have lots of holes in you sets but in time they will fill out. As for key dates try to get those on a regular basis. Some of the key dates I have in my collection I was able to get a dealer to put them aside for me and every time I went to his store I would pay towards them. Before not too long I was able to accumulate a lot of keys.

After 25 years of collecting, 15 of those, seriously, I have acquired a quite large collection of this and that. I have never really went in any certain direction except for some early copper and keys. I have completed a Mercury dime set and a Buffalo nickel set. I am currently working on my IHC Dansco (my favorite Federal issue) and will complete it sometime in the future. This one, I am taking my time on as to acquire only quality coins for the grades

I think everyone changes their focus every once and awhile and it seems the more educated you get about the hobby the more your focus gets honed in on specific things instead of everything round and shiny. I know most people when they first start out they collect everything they can get their hands on and become more of a hoarder of coins instead of a collector because there is no focus. As time goes on and they get more involved and learn more and more they hone their skills and those coins they hoarded seem to not fit anywhere any longer and sometimes you ask yourself why its in the collection or what you were thinking when you added it to to the collection

I think a big part of it is to leave my heir something to collect. If I have the last known available year in the collection, what's next on their list to collect? A 1916-D Merc? An 1877 IHC? A 1909-S VDB or '14-D?

If that won't take the wind out of their sail, I don't know what would. If those pieces are in there and all they have to do is bring Shield Cents or ATB Quarters up to speed, maybe they will be a little more interested to at least dabble, then broaden their horizons.

I guess that's the point I was trying to make. Well, one of them.

I agree with you Scooby. I'm also guilty of "hoarding" as opposed to focusing on something more specific. I got started years ago when my dad was collecting Morgans and all I could afford at the time was pennies, nickles & dime and only occasionally quarters or halves. I've filled in albums of all those series back from when I got started. Lately though it seems to be getting boring with these series that will never end and the mint making it hard to get them anyway. I think I'll be moving to the silver halves and working on getting upgrades to some of the ones I have. I'm guessing that will take a while.

I feel your pain when trying to keep focused and going in the right direction.

Every time I think I have it under control, I see something new .. and end up
lost in space... again

All I can say is .. first step is admitting you have a problem
My name is Tom .. and I collect coins .... I feel better already

I guess "collect what you like" is thrown out the window here by the same posters who told me to do the same about four months ago

Along time ago, in a far away place, (high school, in fact), I did advanced studies in mathematics, history and geography.

I didn't know at the time that was only the start of a continued study at least in history and geography. Why all this speil, you may ask?

As it has turned out that proved to be the foundation and background for collecting world coins, over the last 26 centuries. The coins now provide the impetus for expansion in all three areas: numismatics, history and geography. I have done some interesting travel and built a nice collection of about 2,500 interesting world coins with these tools.

Oh, and the mathematics provided the basis for my career.

Pity about my study of the English language, though: I went to da skool where thay learned ya to talk propper!

I've been collecting coins and other things for well over 60 years now. I have made great and fantastic methods of collecting coins. Here is what I do so you could possibly follow my methods.
I sit down and go over all my Albums, Rolls of coins, numerous boxes of coins in 2x2's and decide on what should be next. I then make a list of which type, mints, dates, quality of coins I should concentrate on next. Then I make a list of all the coins I want, a list of all the coins I need and naturally a list of all the coins I wish I could buy or find.
Next I go to a coin show and leave all those lists at home and just buy whatever I see that I like.

I think the only that gets this so far is svslav.

Read the title - I have a heading.

Everyone keeps trying to give me advice on not "having direction". I have a direction.

My whole point of all of this is to leave my heir the more recent holes to fill and hopefully catch the bug and continue the collection without having the stress of trying to fill key dates, which is what I want to focus on.

All the money that I was going to spend on current and future coins can be directed backwards.

If I hand this set over in 2025 and and it is current and they are missing an '09-S VDB, what do you think they're going to do - sell!

If the '09-S VDB is in there and all they have to do is bring it up to speed with shield cents, I think they might be just a smidgen more inclined to continue the collection.

Get it?
